+ HOW OLD DO CHILDREN NEED TO BE TO BEGIN MONTESSORI?

Children may attend New World’s Toddler program as early as 18-months. They should be at least 2 ½ years old to begin attending New World’s Primary classes. A child may enter the school at any time during the school year, subject to openings in the classroom. In all circumstances, children need to be emotionally willing to spend time away from parents and home.

+ DO YOUNG CHILDREN NEED TO BE TOILET-TRAINED?

Children do not need to be toilet trained for the Toddler program, but they do need to be toilet trained before entering the Primary Montessori classroom.

+ WHAT IS THE SIZE OF A MONTESSORI CLASS?

Montessori class sizes are determined by the following factors:

• Since children in a Montessori primary class range in age from 2½ to 6, we aim to have a large enough group so that each child can have several peers of the same age.
• We also encourage interactions between age groups. An older child helping a younger one is a hallmark of Montessori classrooms. We strive to balance our classrooms with regard to both age and gender.
• One of the most important aspects of the Montessori “Children’s House” is its carefully planned arrangement, which allows children to function independently with minimal adult help. In what Maria Montessori called “the prepared environment,” even a very young child can take charge of his own learning.

+ MY CHILD IS PARTICULARLY BRIGHT. WHAT CAN YOU OFFER HIM OR HER?

Because Montessori philosophy is child-centered, your child may explore as thoroughly and rapidly as he or she is interested. It is not unusual in a Montessori environment to have 4-year-olds begin reading using phonetic materials or begin addition with math materials. Likewise, children who are not yet interested in the particular reading or math materials may focus on other work until they are ready. The needs of both highly capable and less advanced children are met by Montessori Methods.

+ WHAT IS YOUR SCHOOL’S POLICY ON RELIGION?

New World Montessori School is officially a completely nonsectarian institution. Our classrooms contain information about the major religions of the world as part of Montessori’s cultural curriculum. All faiths and belief systems are respected, and children are welcome to share traditions and observe religious holidays as they choose.

+ DO YOU OFFER ART AND MUSIC?

Cultural subjects are part of every day’s activities. Children may learn musical notation, singing, and/or playing instruments such as the recorder or bells. Music history is also a subject that may be pursued. Art materials are part of each classroom, as is material on art history. We view individual expression as intrinsic to the curriculum, not an addendum.

+ WHAT ARE THE SCHOOL HOURS?

School begins at 8:00 am. Children under age 5 leave at 11:15 am. Children who are 5 and older and those in our Bambini program stay for the extended day, which lasts until 3:00 pm. Elementary children attend for the full-day, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

+ HOW DO YOU HANDLE ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL?

Teachers and assistants welcome children between 7:50 am and 8:10 am. Dismissals start at 11:00 am and 2:55 pm. Please say goodbye to your child at the door. This convenient drop-off and pick-up procedure helps minimize separation anxiety and reinforces your child’s need for consistency. + DO YOU OFFER BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL EXTENDED CHILDCARE?

Yes! Children may be dropped off as early as 7:30 am. at no extra charge. After school care is available from 3:00 to 4:30 pm. Read more about our after-school care options here.
